Omi-Maiko Beach

Omi-Maiko Beach is Lake Biwa's busiest freshwater swimming beach, stretching roughly 4 km along the lake's western shore in Otsu City, Shiga. The sand is fine and pale gold, kept groomed through the summer season, and backed by a mature pine grove that offers shade just steps from the waterline. Lake Biwa's water here is calm and typically clear near shore, though visibility drops toward the deeper swimming zones; there is no surf, since the lake has no tidal action, but afternoon winds can raise a light chop that draws windsurfers to the northern stretch. The beach is wide and open rather than a sheltered cove, giving unobstructed views across the lake toward the Hira mountains. Family groups dominate the shallower southern section near Omi-Maiko Station, while windsurfers and a younger swimming crowd cluster further north where the wind is stronger. During the official swimming season (roughly July through August) seasonal changing rooms and cold-water showers operate along the shore, and a run of beach shops and food stalls sells shaved ice, yakisoba, and drinks; a lifeguard presence is maintained on weekends and peak days within that window, though coverage thins on weekdays and disappears outside the season. Paid parking lots open along the shoreline road in summer and fill quickly by mid-morning on weekends. Visitors without a car reach the beach easily via the JR Kosei Line to Omi-Maiko Station, a five-minute walk from the sand, making it one of the most transit-accessible beaches on Lake Biwa. Outside the summer season the beach empties out almost entirely, leaving a long, quiet strip of sand popular with local dog walkers and joggers.
