Kaizu-Osaki Lakeshore

Kaizu-Osaki Lakeshore occupies a peninsula on Lake Biwa's northwest shore in Takashima City's Makino area, best known for a nearly 4-km tunnel of cherry blossoms in spring that draws large crowds each late March and early April. Outside the blossom season, the shoreline becomes a quieter swimming and picnicking spot for visitors willing to make the longer trip from Otsu. The beach itself is a mix of narrow sand and grassy shoreline running along the peninsula's edge, with mild wind exposure typical of Lake Biwa's open northwest reaches; the water is generally calm and clear enough for casual swimming in summer, though it lacks the wide sand expanse of Makino Sunny Beach nearby. A walking path traces the peninsula, offering views back across the lake and toward the Hira and Hiei mountains, and the area is popular for sunset photography once the day's cherry-blossom or summer crowds have thinned. Facilities are seasonal and limited: paid parking operates mainly during the cherry blossom weeks and the summer swimming period, and there are no large food concessions on-site, so visitors typically bring provisions or stop in Makino. Reaching Kaizu-Osaki without a car involves the JR Kosei Line to Makino Station followed by the Makino Kogen bus to the entrance, about a six-minute walk from the bus stop. Because its reputation rests primarily on the spring blossoms, the site sees a sharp contrast between its two peak periods and the relative calm of midsummer weekdays, when the shoreline is largely left to local swimmers and walkers.
