Oura Cathedral (Oura Tenshudo)

Oura Cathedral is the oldest standing Christian church in Japan, completed in 1864 by French missionaries and built to honor the twenty-six Catholic martyrs executed in Nagasaki in 1597. The wooden Gothic-style structure, painted white with pointed spires, gained further historical weight a year after its completion when a group of hidden Christians from the nearby village of Urakami revealed themselves to the resident priest, an event known as the Discovery of Hidden Christians, considered a landmark moment in world religious history. The interior preserves ribbed vaulting and stained-glass windows that cast colored light across the nave, along with a small museum wing displaying artifacts related to the Hidden Christian communities who preserved their faith in secret for over two centuries. A visit typically takes thirty to sixty minutes, including the adjoining museum rooms. The cathedral sits on a hillside connected by stone steps to Glover Garden above and the Dutch Slopes district nearby, so most visitors combine all three in a single walking route through Minami-Yamate. Morning light filters most vividly through the stained glass, and the church, along with related Hidden Christian sites across the Nagasaki region, is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
