Former Nagasaki Prefectural Courthouse (Kyu-Nagasaki Saibansho)

The Nagasaki Glover Sky Road is a set of covered outdoor escalators and elevators built into the steep hillside of the Minami-Yamate district to help residents and visitors climb the slope between downtown Nagasaki and the historic Glover Garden and Oura Cathedral area. The route incorporates the Former Nagasaki Prefectural Courthouse, a Meiji-era building relocated and restored partway up the hillside, which now functions as a rest stop and small exhibition space along the ascent. Riding the escalators to the top takes only a few minutes, but the platforms along the way open onto increasingly wide views over Nagasaki Harbour, the shipyards, and the rooftops of the Higashiyamate and Minami-Yamate districts below, making the ride itself a minor attraction rather than pure infrastructure. Most visitors use the Sky Road as a practical shortcut on the way to or from Glover Garden, spending twenty to thirty minutes total if they pause at the viewing platforms and the former courthouse building. Sunset is a popular time to ride up, when the harbor view below catches the evening light, and the escalators are free to use, operating on a fixed daily schedule. The route is significantly easier on the legs than climbing the parallel stone staircases through the neighborhood, and it works well as a scenic alternative for reaching Glover Garden from the harbor side of the hill.
