Glover Garden (Guraba-en)

Glover Garden preserves a cluster of nineteenth-century Western-style residences built for foreign merchants who settled in Nagasaki after the port opened to trade in 1859. The centerpiece is Glover House, the oldest surviving wooden Western-style building in Japan, built for Scottish merchant Thomas Blake Glover, whose trading firm supplied ships and arms during the late Edo period and whose life inspired elements of the opera Madama Butterfly. A network of outdoor escalators and stone paths climbs the hillside past the Ringer House, Alt House, and other relocated colonial buildings, opening onto sweeping views over Nagasaki Harbour and the shipyards below. Rose gardens, palm trees, and Western furnishings inside the houses give the grounds a distinct blended feel of Meiji-era Japan and European colonial architecture. Most visitors spend one to two hours walking the terraced paths from the upper entrance down to the harbor-view exit, and the layout is best done downhill, entering near the top via the connecting escalators from Oura Cathedral. Mornings are quieter, while late afternoon brings warm light over the harbor and, in spring, blooming roses and wisteria along the garden's arbors. The garden gets busy with tour groups midday, especially when cruise ships are docked in the harbor.
