Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort

Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort combines a large, historic ski area with one of Japan's most traditional hot-spring villages, located in Shimotakai-gun, Nagano. The resort spreads across 36 marked runs, from nursery slopes near the village to steep mogul fields on the upper mountain, making it accessible to complete beginners as well as advanced skiers and snowboarders. No experience is required for the lower slopes, and the on-site ski school, run by Nozawa Kanko Co., Ltd., offers English-language group and private lessons. Equipment rental, including skis, snowboards, boots, and helmets, is available both at the resort base and in shops throughout the village, so visitors need not bring their own gear. Nozawa Kanko has operated the resort for decades and maintains a marked trail network, ski patrol, and first-aid stations, with clear signage distinguishing groomed runs from off-piste terrain that carries avalanche risk. Safety information on trail closures and weather is posted daily at lift stations, and patrol teams handle on-mountain incidents directly. The resort is known for exceptionally heavy snowfall, often exceeding ten metres per season, with the most reliable powder conditions from January through February; the season runs from late December to mid-April, with wetter, heavier snow typical toward the tail end. After skiing, the village's thirteen free public onsen bathhouses offer a traditional way to warm up, though a small donation is customary. The village lies about 50 kilometres from Nagano City and requires studless winter tyres or snow chains to drive in during the season.
