Kaeda Gorge — Autumn Foliage

Kaeda Gorge is a river ravine in Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, known locally for a dense concentration of maple trees that turn deep red and orange along the water's edge each autumn. The strongest frame follows the river through the gorge with overhanging maple canopy on both banks, either a tight composition on a single branch against the water or a wider shot layering multiple stands of foliage with a telephoto lens. The gorge is largely shaded by tree cover and steep banks, so overcast days give the most even, saturated color rendition, while direct sun creates patchy hot spots and deep shadow that fight the foliage color. Mid-November is the narrow peak window for color; the display can shift by a week or two depending on the season's temperatures, so checking recent local reports before a special trip is worthwhile. The gorge is a local rather than a mass-tourism destination, so crowds are generally light even at peak color, with only occasional local photographers along the riverside path. There is no formal restriction on tripods along the public riverside trail, and no admission fee to enter the gorge area. Footing along the river's edge can be uneven and slick after rain, so sturdy footwear is worth having.
