Horikiri Pass — Nichinan Coast Panorama

Horikiri Pass is a roadside overlook on Route 220 between Aoshima and Nichinan City in Miyazaki Prefecture, where the coastal highway climbs above a bay lined with subtropical vegetation and rugged cliffs falling to the Pacific. The classic frame is a wide sweep from the elevated pull-in showing the curved bay, the palm-lined roadside, and the open ocean beyond, with the road itself sometimes included as a leading line. Facing roughly east over the bay, the pass catches warm side light in the late afternoon as the sun angles across the water, while sunrise offers a cooler, more diffuse alternative with a chance of coastal haze. April through November gives the clearest visibility for the long coastal sightline; winter can bring stronger wind and haze off the Pacific. The pull-in is small and shared with passing traffic, so it rarely feels crowded, though weekend drivers along the scenic route can make finding a parking spot briefly competitive around midday. There is no fee and no formal restriction on tripod use at the roadside overlook, though visitors should stay well clear of the traffic lane. Drone use is not specifically regulated at the site, but flying near the highway carries obvious safety considerations.
