Cape Toi — Wild Horses & Coastal Cliffs

Cape Toi is the southernmost point of Kushima City, Miyazaki Prefecture, a windswept grassland cape rising above Pacific Ocean cliffs and home to a small population of semi-wild Misaki horses that have grazed the headland for centuries. The strongest frame places grazing horses in the foreground with the cliff edge and open Pacific horizon behind, or a wide shot of the cape's lighthouse silhouetted against the ocean. The cape faces open ocean to the south and east, so morning light comes in low and side-on, picking out the texture of the horses' coats and the grass without the flat overhead shadow of midday. October through March brings the clearest, least hazy air for long ocean sightlines, while summer humidity often mutes the horizon. The site rarely gets crowded even on weekends, since it requires a drive along a narrow coastal road, though the small parking area near the lighthouse can fill during holiday periods. There is no fee to view the horses, which roam a fenced conservation area, and visitors are asked to keep a respectful distance rather than approach them directly. Tripods are permitted throughout the public viewing areas, and the open cape terrain poses no access restriction beyond a short walk from the parking area.
