Surfing at Kisakibaru Beach introduces visitors to one of Miyazaki City's consistent right-hand beach breaks, a stretch of sand a short drive from the coastal Nichinan Kaigan road. Coconut Grove Surf School runs the main lesson operation here, offering two-hour beginner sessions as well as board and wetsuit rental for independent surfers who already know how to paddle out and read a line-up. The beach break suits first-timers and intermediate surfers alike: waves rarely exceed head height even in the October-to-March swell season, and the sandy bottom reduces the risk of reef cuts common elsewhere on the Kyushu coast. There is no minimum age for beginner lessons, though the school generally recommends children be at least eight years old and comfortable in open water without a life jacket. Lessons include a soft-top surfboard and, outside the June-to-October warm-water window, a full wetsuit; sunscreen, a leash, and transport to the beach are left to the surfer to arrange. Coconut Grove's instructors are certified through the Nippon Surfing Association and run a standard pre-session safety briefing covering rip current identification, beach flag signals, and hand signals for calling an instructor over in open water; in the rare case of a medical incident, staff carry a first-aid kit on the beach and coordinate evacuation with the Miyazaki City lifeguard patrol during summer months. Surf conditions peak from October through March, when north Pacific groundswell wraps into the bay and produces the most rideable waves of the year; July and August bring the warmest water and the largest weekend crowds, but the swell is typically smaller and wind-affected by early afternoon sea breezes. Surfers should avoid sessions immediately after typhoons pass offshore, when the beach can hold dangerous shorebreak and strong rip currents even though the waves look inviting from the car park.
