Two churches stacked in one: a Romanesque lower church and a Gothic upper church with a timber ship's-keel ceiling. It is on the four-church ticket.
The Basilica di San Fermo Maggiore stands on Stradone San Fermo in the historic centre of Verona, Italy, close to the Adige and a ten-minute walk from Piazza Bra. It is unusual because it consists of two churches built one above the other. The lower church dates from the eighth century and was rebuilt in the Romanesque style in the eleventh and twelfth centuries, and it is a dim, atmospheric space with thick columns, fragments of medieval frescoes and carved capitals. The upper church was rebuilt in the Gothic style in the fourteenth century by the Franciscans, and it is a single bright hall covered by a timber ceiling shaped like the keel of a ship, one of the finest examples in northern Italy. Its walls carry Gothic frescoes, including an Annunciation by Pisanello near the entrance, and a pulpit and tombs from the same period. The exterior is equally striking, with alternating bands of brick and tufa, a Gothic portal and a Romanesque apse with small arches visible from the riverside. Visitors normally spend 30 to 40 minutes, long enough to see both levels, the frescoes and the ceiling. Good photo angles are the view up the nave toward the ship's-keel ceiling, the contrast between the dim lower church and the lit upper hall, and the apse seen from the road beside the river. The basilica is calm on weekday mornings, with busier periods around midday when tour groups arrive; Sundays open only from 1PM. Entry is included in the Chiese Vive ticket, costing EUR 4 for a single church or EUR 8 for four, with free admission for children under 11. Visitors should dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees. The church lies near the Ponte Navi and the main shopping streets, so it fits easily into a walk between Piazza Bra and the river.
