Lago di Caldaro (Kalterer See)

Lago di Caldaro, known in German as the Kalterer See, sits among the vineyards of the South Tyrolean Wine Road just south of Bolzano, and is widely described as the warmest bathing lake in the Alps, with shallow waters that can climb to around 28 degrees in high summer. Its modest depth and sheltered, sun-trapped position in the Adige Valley give it that exceptional warmth, making it one of the most comfortable lakes in the region for swimming, especially for families and those who dislike cold alpine water. The shore is partly reed-fringed and backed by gentle vineyard slopes rather than high peaks, and several organised lidos provide grassy lawns, swimming zones, pools, pedalo and stand-up paddleboard hire, bars and restaurants, with lifeguards in the high season. The warm, fairly calm water and the steady valley breezes also make it a popular spot for windsurfing and kitesurfing. Beyond bathing, the lake's great appeal is its setting on the Wine Road: Caldaro and Termeno are among South Tyrol's most important wine villages, famous for Lagrein, Gewürztraminer and the soft red Kalterersee wine named after the lake itself, so a swim pairs naturally with a vineyard walk and a tasting. The mild Mediterranean-influenced climate keeps the area pleasant for much of the year, and the surrounding wine villages, castles and cycle paths add interest beyond the beach. In peak summer the lidos can be busy on hot weekends, but the lake is large enough to absorb the crowds.
