The Oasi del Simeto is a nature reserve of wetland and dunes at the mouth of the Simeto river, south of Catania near Villaggio Primosole, in Sicily, Italy. It lies along the Ionian coast beside the Plain of Catania and is a stopover for migratory birds, which makes it the main wildlife photography site near the city. The frame is a low, open one: reed beds, shallow water and sandy dunes in the foreground, with birds on the water or in flight and, on clear days, Mount Etna on the northern horizon. Species vary by season, and wading birds, herons and ducks are typical visitors, though the actual sightings depend on weather and timing. A telephoto lens of 100-400mm is the main tool, since birds keep their distance, and a hide or a quiet position at the water's edge improves results. Early morning is the best time, when birds are active and the sun, rising from the east over the sea, gives low side-light across the wetland; the hour after sunrise offers warm colour and calm water for reflections. Evening can also work, with the sun setting behind the plain, but heat and glare make midday unproductive. The best season is October to April, when migrants and winter visitors are present; in summer, heat, mosquitoes and fewer birds make visits less rewarding. The reserve is quiet, with few visitors apart from birdwatchers and local walkers, so there is no real competition for position, although moving slowly and quietly is essential. Tripods and monopods are useful and generally allowed, but visitors should stay on marked paths and follow reserve rules. Drones are not appropriate in a protected bird reserve and are restricted, so avoid flying. Access conditions, opening hours and any fees vary, so check with the reserve management before visiting. Insect repellent, binoculars and water are advisable, and facilities on site are limited. Muted clothing helps avoid disturbing wildlife.
