The Gole dell'Alcantara is a narrow canyon cut through basalt by the Alcantara river at Motta Camastra, in the province of Messina, Sicily, Italy, roughly 60 kilometres north of Catania and used as a half-day trip from the city. The walls are formed of prismatic basalt columns, the result of an ancient lava flow cooling and cracking, and the river runs cold and green between them.

The frame on offer is tight and vertical: columns rising on both sides, a thin strip of sky above and water below. Wide-angle lenses are needed, as the walls leave little room to step back. Light reaches the bottom only when the sun is high, so late morning to early afternoon is the best window, when direct light enters the gorge and lights the upper walls while reflections shimmer on the water. Early or late in the day, the gorge is in shade, which suits long exposures but gives little colour. The best season is June to September, when water levels and temperatures allow safe access to the river; in cooler months and after heavy rain, access can be limited. The gorge is among the busiest sites in the region in summer, particularly around midday, so tripod space is scarce and shooting can be interrupted by groups; arriving at opening time or late in the afternoon helps. Tripods may be impractical in the narrow, wet sections, and drones are generally unsuitable and may be restricted, so check with the site operator. Entry is paid, and fees for the riverside area, lifts and wading equipment vary by season, so confirm current prices. Waterproof bags, water shoes and a polarising filter to cut glare on the water are standard kit. Wading in cold water to the gorge floor is part of the experience, and the stones are slippery.
