Parking is available at the Sapienza plateau. The cable car (funiviaetna.com) rises to about 2,500 m, after which visitors continue on foot or by 4x4 with a guide to the highest point open on the day, which can be up to about 3,000 m. Without the cable car, the climb from Sapienza on foot is up to about 1,100 m of ascent and takes a full day, while with the cable car and 4x4 stage the ascent is about 500 m and the outing lasts about 3 to 4 hours. Authorised alpine or volcanological guides are mandatory in the summit zone above roughly 2,900 m, and access is suspended or rationed under municipal ordinances (for example Belpasso ordinance no. 135 of 10 August 2026) when the alert phase is ATTENZIONE, PREALLARME or ALLARME. The terrain is loose cinder, lava blocks and scree with very little shade, strong wind exposure and sudden weather changes, and it is considered a hard route. Landmarks include Torre del Filosofo, the summit craters with steaming fumaroles, and wide views of the island and the Ionian Sea on clear days. There are no water sources above the cable car station, though the upper station has a bar and shelter. Guides usually supply helmets, and walkers should bring mountain boots, a windproof shell, warm hat, gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen. The guide determines the turn-around point depending on volcanic activity and wind, and visitors should follow instructions strictly. The INGV weekly bulletin at ct.ingv.it should be checked before travelling.
