Isole Tremiti

The Isole Tremiti are a small archipelago in the Adriatic off the Gargano coast of Puglia, reached by a 45-minute fast hydrofoil from Vieste or Manfredonia (around €20–25 return) or a slower 3-hour ferry. Two islands are visited on a day trip: San Domino, the green and wooded main island, and San Nicola, the historic and fortified one, linked to each other by a short shuttle ferry. A morning hydrofoil — Vieste departures are around 8:30 AM — gives the fullest day before the last return near 6 PM. Visitors typically begin on San Nicola, walking up to the fortified Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare with its medieval walls, mosaics and sweeping sea views, then cross to San Domino for pine woods, coves and the best swimming. The classic activity is a small-boat tour circling San Domino to reach sea caves such as the Grotta del Bue Marino and hidden inlets only accessible from the water, often with a swimming stop in the protected marine reserve that surrounds the islands. Lunch is fresh Adriatic seafood at a harbour trattoria. Because the islands lie far up the Gargano, public transport from Bari is slow — a train to Foggia, a Ferrovie del Gargano bus to Vieste, then the ferry, allowing three or more hours each way — so many travellers base themselves near Vieste or Manfredonia to make the crossing easier. Service is essentially seasonal, concentrated June–September, with reduced and weather-dependent sailings in the shoulder months. Private cars are restricted on the islands, which are small enough to explore on foot or by local boat. Sturdy shoes, swimwear, water and reef-safe sunscreen are the day's essentials, and timetables should be confirmed in advance as wind can cancel the smaller crossings.
