Trani Cathedral and Seafront

Trani sits 45 km northwest of Bari on the Adriatic, a 40-minute Trenitalia regional ride for €4.80, with the station only a five-minute walk from the seafront — making it one of Puglia's easiest day trips. Its icon is the Romanesque Cattedrale di San Nicola Pellegrino, built of pale local stone right at the water's edge, its tall façade and rose window rising dramatically above the harbour; the layered interior includes a crypt of slender columns and the original 12th-century bronze doors. Around it spreads a working fishing harbour fringed with boats and seafood restaurants, the Swabian Castello Svevo raised by Frederick II beside the sea, and a remarkably intact medieval Jewish quarter, the Giudecca, where the Scolanova synagogue survives as one of the oldest in Europe. A relaxed one-day arc takes in the cathedral and crypt and the castle in the morning, a lunch of raw Adriatic seafood paired with the local Moscato di Trani dessert wine, and an afternoon stroll along the port and through the Giudecca's narrow lanes, finishing in the Villa Comunale gardens overlooking the sea. The train is the obvious choice, as it avoids town parking, though the SS16 coastal road takes a similar 45 minutes by car. Trani is appealing year-round; the patron-saint Festa di San Nicola Pellegrino in late May fills the streets with processions, and late-afternoon or sunset light turns the cathedral stone luminous. Compact and walkable, with most sights within a few minutes of one another, Trani rewards an unhurried half or full day exploring its harbour, monuments and seafront.
