Short ridge walking at the highest point in Kutch, looking out over the white expanse of the Great Rann from a basalt hilltop crowned by the 400-year-old Dattatreya temple.
Kalo Dungar, the Black Hill, rises to 462 m above the salt flats north of Bhuj and is the highest point in Kutch district. It is less a hike than a spectacular short walk: a metalled road climbs to a car park just below the summit, and from there paths and the ridge line give one to two hours of easy walking with the entire Great Rann laid out to the north, a horizon of white salt crust that shimmers in the dry season and becomes a shallow sheet of water during the monsoon. The summit carries a Dattatreya temple said to be around 400 years old, where a long-standing tradition of feeding prasad to jackals is still observed at dusk. A short distance below the temple, a stretch of the approach road is known locally as the magnetic hill, where vehicles left in neutral appear to roll uphill, an optical illusion created by the slope of the surrounding terrain. The walking itself is on open basalt and thorn scrub with almost no shade, which makes early morning and late afternoon the only comfortable windows; from March to June the heat here is severe. From October to February, conditions are ideal, and the hill sits within easy reach of Dhordo and the White Rann, making it a standard stop on a Kutch circuit. The summit lies in a sensitive border zone, so army and border police posts are present nearby, photography towards restricted installations is not permitted, and the road may be closed after dark.

Accessibility
The road runs almost to the summit and the temple forecourt is a short, mostly level walk from the car park, so the main viewpoint is reachable by visitors with limited mobility. The ridge paths beyond are rough basalt.
