The Barda hills rise behind Porbandar on the Saurashtra coast, a compact range of low volcanic hills covered in dry deciduous and thorn forest and protected as the Barda Wildlife Sanctuary. For decades the sanctuary was a footnote to Gir, but it has become significant as a second natural range for the Asiatic lion, with animals dispersing here from the Gir landscape and breeding successfully, which has raised its profile with wildlife authorities and visitors alike.

Dry deciduous hill walking in a little-visited sanctuary behind Porbandar, now a second home for translocated Asiatic lions, with forest tracks, seasonal streams and Maher pastoral settlements.

Walking is on forest department tracks and pastoral paths rather than waymarked trails, with typical outings of five to twelve kilometres over rolling ground that reaches about 600 m at the highest points. Permission and a forest guide are arranged through the range office, and independent off-track walking is not appropriate given the presence of lions, leopards and hyena. Beyond the large mammals, the sanctuary supports chinkara, wild boar, jackal and more than 250 recorded bird species, and the hills hold old temple sites at Khambhala and Bileshwar as well as seasonal streams and small reservoirs. The Maher and Rabari communities graze cattle across the slopes, and encounters with herders are far more common than with tourists. The season runs from roughly October to March, when the hills are dry, cool and passable; summer here is harsh and exposed, and monsoon tracks turn to mud. Porbandar, about 15 km away, is the practical base, with its airport, railway station and the Kirti Mandir birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi.

Tips for visiting

  • Arrange permission and a forest guide at the range office before entering; independent walking is not appropriate where lions are present.
  • Walk from October to March, as the summer heat is severe and monsoon tracks become impassable.
  • Base in Porbandar, about 15 km away, which has the nearest hotels, railway station and airport.
  • Carry all water and food, since there are no facilities inside the sanctuary.
  • Bring binoculars: the birdlife is the most reliable wildlife sighting on any given walk.

When to visit

Early morning from November to February, when carnivore and bird activity peak and the hills are cool enough for several hours on foot.

Accessibility

Forest tracks are unsurfaced and uneven and the sanctuary has no accessible infrastructure, so the walking routes are not suitable for wheelchair users or visitors with significant mobility limits.

Frequently asked questions

Are there really lions in the Barda hills?

Yes. Asiatic lions dispersing from the Gir landscape have established themselves in Barda, which is now recognised as a second natural range for the species.

Can the sanctuary be walked independently?

No. Entry requires forest department permission and a guide, both arranged at the range office, because of the presence of large carnivores.

What is the nearest base town?

Porbandar, roughly 15 km from the sanctuary, which has hotels, a railway station and a domestic airport.
