Ahmedabad is Gujarat's largest city and India's first UNESCO World Heritage City (2017), a Sabarmati River metropolis where the walled Old City's carved-wood pols, Sultanate-era mosques, and Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram sit alongside a fast-growing metro, riverfront promenades, and one of India's best vegetarian food cultures.
Ahmedabad's nightlife is shaped by Gujarat's alcohol prohibition, which has been in force since 1960. There are no standalone bars or pubs; alcohol is available only to permit holders in licensed hotels, so the city's after-dark culture centres on street-food bazaars, late cafes, rooftop lounges, riverfront walks, live-music cafes on Sindhu Bhavan Road and garba nights during Navratri. Visitors from outside Gujarat and foreign tourists can apply for a short-term liquor permit online through the Gujarat e-Permit portal (eps.gujarat.gov.in), and the state's authorised permit shops sit inside hotels. Most venues close by 23:00-01:00, with the Manek Chowk food bazaar and a few round-the-clock hotel cafes running later.
The scene divides into four clusters. Manek Chowk and Law Garden supply the traditional night-market experience; Sindhu Bhavan Road and the SG Highway corridor host modern cafes, lounges and live-music rooms; Prahlad Nagar and Sola have hotel rooftop lounges and poolside bars; and the Sabarmati Riverfront is the after-dinner stroll. Alcohol service is limited to permit holders in hotel venues, and many cafes offer mocktails, cold coffees and hookah-free lounge experiences instead. Dry days, including Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti, apply everywhere, though prohibition already applies year-round. Nightlife is generally safe for solo travellers, with app cabs available late; women travelling alone should prefer well-lit hotel and mall venues after midnight.
At a glance
- Peak hours
- Street-food bazaars peak from 21:00 to midnight. Cafes and lounges on Sindhu Bhavan Road are busiest on Friday and Saturday from 20:00 to 23:00. Navratri garba nights run roughly 20:00 to midnight.
- Average drink
- Alcohol is served only to permit holders in licensed hotel venues, where a beer costs roughly INR 500-800 (approx $5-8 USD) and a cocktail INR 700-1,200 (approx $7-13 USD); prices vary by hotel. Cafe mocktails and coffees cost INR 150-350 (approx $2-4 USD).
- Dress code
- Smart casual is enough almost everywhere; hotel lounges may ask for closed footwear. Modest clothing is advisable at Manek Chowk and the old city. Garba grounds welcome traditional Indian dress and sometimes require it for entry.
- Cover charge
- Gujarat is a prohibition state. Visitors from outside the state and foreign tourists may apply for a liquor permit online (eps.gujarat.gov.in), which allows purchase at authorised permit shops located in hotels and consumption in licensed hotel venues. Rules and fees can change, so confirm current terms on the portal and with the hotel before travel.

Nightlife tips
Stay safe and have fun.
Alcohol is permitted only for permit holders in licensed hotels; apply online at eps.gujarat.gov.in in advance and carry ID and a printed permit.
Never drink in public places, on the street or in a car; it is a punishable offence in Gujarat.
Do not bring liquor into Gujarat from other states or from Diu, Daman or Rajasthan.
Use app cabs after 22:00 and share ride details with someone.
Most cafes stop serving by 23:30; Manek Chowk and round-the-clock hotel cafes are the exceptions.
Carry small notes for street food and UPI for stalls that accept it.
During Navratri, expect road closures near major garba grounds and book cabs in advance.
Solo travellers, especially women, should prefer hotel venues, malls and busy areas late at night.
