The Shree Swaminarayan Mandir at Kalupur, in Ahmedabad's Old City, is regarded as the first temple of the Swaminarayan Sampradaya and was dedicated in 1822. Its founder, Sahajanand Swami, later known as Swaminarayan, oversaw the project with the support of the British Governor of Bombay, Sir John Malcolm, who is recorded as having granted the land.

The temple became the seat of the Nar Narayan Dev Gadi, the diocese headquartered in Ahmedabad, and it remains the administrative centre of that branch of the movement. Its architecture is a striking example of Gujarat's wooden temple tradition. The facade and interior are constructed largely of Burma teak, densely carved with figures of deities, saints, dancers, musicians, flowers and geometric patterns, and the carving extends across pillars, brackets, doorways and ceilings. Some of the work is painted, and the colour combined with polished wood produces an ornate, highly detailed effect. The main shrine holds the images of Nar Narayan Dev, and the shrine of Swaminarayan's associates and other deities can be seen in adjoining halls. The temple complex includes a large courtyard and gate, and separate entrances and seating for men and women follow the sect's custom. The building has been maintained and refurbished by the temple trust, and the wood carving is in generally good condition, though heavy use and humidity require ongoing care. It is a place of active worship, with several darshan windows and ritual services each day, so the atmosphere is devotional rather than museum-like. Visitors of all backgrounds are welcome, provided they dress modestly, remove footwear and observe the sect's rules. The temple sits within the dense lanes of Kalupur, a short distance from the railway station, and can be paired with visits to the Old City's Pol houses and monuments.
