Kellia Guesthouse Monemvasia

Kellia Guesthouse is set within the medieval castle complex of Monemvasia on the southern coast of Laconia in the Peloponnese. Monemvasia is a Byzantine fortified town built on a large rock connected to the mainland by a single causeway — its name derives from the Greek for 'single entrance' — and the Kastro's lower town contains a dense concentration of Byzantine churches, vaulted stone lanes, and restored residences dating from the 13th to 18th centuries. Kellia occupies a restored medieval building within the lower town's pedestrian network, accessible only on foot from the single fortified gatehouse; guests arrive by car at the mainland village of Gefyra and walk through the causeway and the castle gate, a distance of about 10 minutes. The rooms are built from local limestone with vaulted stone ceilings, arched recesses, and thick walls that stay naturally cool during summer — the same construction techniques used when the building was first raised in the medieval period. Select rooms have views over the tiled rooftops toward the Myrtoan Sea. Room categories include atmospheric medieval stone rooms and split-level loft suites with stone archways and sea glimpses from upper windows. Breakfast is included in the stay and is typically served in the guesthouse's common area or small courtyard. No pool or spa is available, but the 13th-century cathedral of Elkomenos Christos — one of the finest Byzantine churches in the southern Peloponnese — is steps away, and the ruins of the upper castle with panoramic coastal views are a 30-minute walk uphill. Accommodation inside the Monemvasia Kastro is extremely limited and fills many months ahead during peak season.
