Lüneburg

Lüneburg lies about 130 km northeast of Hannover, the farthest of the region's day trips, reached in 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes by regional express with a change at Uelzen or Lehrte. The town's wealth came from centuries of salt trading, visible today in the gabled brick facades lining the old town streets radiating from Am Sande, one of the largest and best-preserved market squares of its kind in northern Germany. A morning walk from Am Sande through the old town takes in the Rathaus, the Wasserturm water tower leaning visibly off vertical due to subsidence from the salt works beneath the town, and the brick Gothic churches of St. Johannis and St. Michaelis. The Deutsches Salzmuseum, built on the site of the former Saline Lüneburg saltworks, covers the salt trade that built the town's fortune and suits a stop before or after lunch. For visitors travelling in August or September, the Lüneburg Heath (Lüneburger Heide), a short bus or regional train ride outside town, turns purple with blooming heather, and a combined visit pairs the old town in the morning with a heath walk in the afternoon, though this extends the day given Lüneburg's own distance from Hannover. Restaurants and cafés cluster around Am Sande and the old town's brick-paved lanes, with several serving regional North German dishes; the old crane (Alter Kran) on the Ilmenau river makes a scenic spot for a short rest between the old town and any heath excursion. Given the roughly 90-minute one-way travel time, an early departure from Hannover is worth planning to leave a full day for both the old town and, if desired, the heath. The old town itself is enjoyable year-round thanks to its brick architecture and museums, while the heather bloom narrows the ideal window for the Heide portion to late summer.
