Wolfsburg and the Autostadt

Wolfsburg lies about 90 km east of Hannover, reached in 35 to 40 minutes by direct ICE or about an hour by regional express, and the day trip is built almost entirely around the Autostadt, Volkswagen's visitor park beside its headquarters and main factory. The park's brand pavilions, one for each Volkswagen Group marque including Audi, Porsche, and Škoda, occupy a morning on their own, with interactive exhibits and current model lineups displayed in purpose-built architecture around a central lagoon. The two glass car delivery towers, where new vehicles are stored and lifted to customers picking up their cars, are one of the site's best-known sights and worth timing a visit around, since deliveries happen on a visible schedule through the day. The ZeitHaus, the Autostadt's automotive museum, holds a chronological collection of production and concept cars from more than a century of manufacturing and suits an afternoon visit, particularly for those with a deeper interest in automotive history. Visitors who book ahead can add a guided tour of the adjacent Volkswagen factory (Werk Wolfsburg) itself, which runs on a separate ticket and schedule from general Autostadt admission. Because the site is large, with pavilions spread across landscaped grounds, a full day is more realistic than a half day for seeing more than two or three pavilions plus the museum. Several restaurants and cafés operate within the Autostadt grounds, ranging from quick self-service options to a sit-down restaurant, so lunch does not require leaving the park. Given that the pavilions, museum, and delivery towers are almost entirely indoors or under cover, Wolfsburg works as a day trip in any season, including as a wet-weather alternative to the region's more outdoor-focused old towns.
