Steinhuder Meer

Steinhuder Meer, Lower Saxony's largest lake, lies about 40 km west of Hannover and is reached in 40 to 50 minutes by regional train (RB) to Wunstorf followed by bus 570 into the lakeside village of Steinhude. The lake itself, ringed by reed beds and sailing harbors, is the draw rather than any single building, so the day trip centers on the water: a boat trip from the Steinhude harbor out to Wilhelmstein, a small artificial island fortress built in the 18th century by Count Wilhelm of Schaumburg-Lippe, makes a natural late-morning excursion once the first boats depart. The fortress itself, reachable only by boat, has a small museum on its military history and defensive walls that can be toured in under an hour. Back on shore, the village of Steinhude has a working fishing harbor where local boats land the Steinhuder eel and other regional catches sold smoked at harborside stands, a good stop for lunch before continuing along the lake. In the afternoon, the promenade along the southern shore offers level walking past reed beds and sailing clubs, with several spots for a swim from the sandy sections of shoreline in summer. Cyclists can also rent bikes near the harbor to circle sections of the lake's roughly 32 km shoreline, though the full loop is a longer undertaking than a typical day-trip pace allows. Because bus connections from Wunstorf run on a set schedule, checking the return times before setting out helps avoid a long wait at the end of the day. May through September is by far the best window, both for the Wilhelmstein boat service, which is reduced or stops outside the warmer months, and for swimming from the lake's beaches.
