Braunschweig (Brunswick), Lower Saxony's second-largest city, lies about 65 km east of Hannover and is reached in 30 to 35 minutes by direct ICE or about 50 minutes by regional express from Hannover Hauptbahnhof. The day naturally centers on Burgplatz, the medieval square where Henry the Lion's bronze lion statue, cast around 1166, stands in front of the Romanesque Braunschweig Cathedral (St. Blasii), which holds the duke's tomb and a restored medieval crypt. A morning visit covers the cathedral interior and the surrounding Burgplatz ensemble, including the Dankwarderode Castle, a 19th-century reconstruction of Henry the Lion's residence. From Burgplatz, it is a short walk to the Altstadtmarkt, the rebuilt old market square lined with half-timbered houses and the Gothic Martinikirche, offering a contrast in architectural style to the cathedral quarter. The Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum, one of Germany's oldest public art collections, holds Old Master paintings by Rembrandt and Vermeer and suits an afternoon visit, particularly on a wet or cold day. Lunch options cluster around the Altstadtmarkt and the nearby Magniviertel, a quieter half-timbered quarter with cafés and traditional restaurants serving regional dishes. Because Braunschweig's sights are split between an outdoor medieval core and several indoor museums, the day trip works in any season: outdoor time can be shortened in poor weather by spending more of the afternoon in the Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum or the Landesmuseum.
