The Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild is a Belle Époque Italianate villa on the Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat peninsula in the Alpes-Maritimes, built between 1905 and 1912 by Béatrice de Rothschild, heiress to the Rothschild banking family, and named after her first husband Maurice Ephrussi. The villa is now owned and managed by the Académie des Beaux-Arts and houses the most elaborate private garden complex on the French Riviera — nine themed gardens extending over 7 hectares on the narrow peninsula with the Mediterranean visible on both sides. The French garden at the centre is the most famous, a long formal parterre modelled on a ship's deck (Béatrice was an avid sailor) with a central 100-metre water feature framed by topiary and a classical colonnade. Musical fountains in the French garden perform automatically every 20 minutes throughout the day, synchronised to Baroque music. The surrounding eight themed gardens include a Japanese garden with bamboo groves and red maple, a Florentine garden of rose arches, a Spanish garden with Moorish tiling and fountains, a Lapidary garden of carved stonework, a Provençal garden of scented plants, and a stone-ringed Exotic garden. The villa interior contains Béatrice de Rothschild's personal collection of over 5,000 objects: Sèvres porcelain, Flemish tapestries, Louis XV and Louis XVI furniture, Fragonard paintings, and Meissen figurines arranged as they were during her lifetime. The ground floor of the villa is open as a house museum. The villa's tea room on the south terrace overlooking the French garden and the sea is one of the most scenic café settings on the Riviera. Admission to the villa and all gardens is combined in a single ticket.
