Nice Musée Marc Chagall

The Musée National Marc Chagall in Nice is the only French national museum dedicated to the work of a single 20th-century foreign-born artist, and it is the most comprehensive collection of Chagall's works related to sacred and biblical themes anywhere in the world. The museum was built specifically to house the Biblical Message series — 17 monumental canvases that Chagall considered the defining achievement of his career — and was opened in 1973 by the artist himself, then aged 86. Chagall supervised the design and orientation of the building with architect André Hermant to ensure that natural Mediterranean light fell on the paintings in a way that animated their luminous blue, gold, and crimson colour fields. The Biblical Message canvases divide into two rooms: the main hall houses 12 large paintings depicting scenes from Genesis, Exodus, and the Song of Songs, while an adjacent room contains five works on themes from Moses. The paintings are vast — several measure over 4 by 3 metres — and are displayed low enough for close viewing. A separate hexagonal room contains three stained-glass windows by Chagall showing the Creation of the World, their deep blue cobalt glass providing an extraordinary quality of filtered light throughout the day. The museum also holds the complete preparatory drawings, gouaches, and lithographs for the Biblical Message series, providing insight into Chagall's working process. Beyond the permanent collection, the museum holds a significant collection of Chagall's later mosaics, tapestries, and paintings not related to the Biblical Message, displayed in secondary galleries. The museum garden contains a Chagall-designed mosaic at its centre and provides a quiet outdoor space overlooking a reflecting pool. The museum is located in the Cimiez district, a 20-minute walk uphill from the Promenade des Anglais in Nice.
