Promenade des Anglais

The Promenade des Anglais is the defining landmark of Nice and one of the most celebrated seafront promenades in the world, running 7 kilometres along the Baie des Anges from the city's airport terminal to the base of Castle Hill (Colline du Château). The boulevard owes its name and initial construction to the English expatriate community that wintered in Nice from the early 19th century; the first formal promenade was laid in 1822 using funds donated by the Reverend Lewis Way. Today the promenade is both an active four-lane road and a wide leisure corridor on its seaward side, where a palm-shaded pedestrian and cycling path runs the full length facing the pebble beach. The most iconic element is the series of sky-blue wooden chairs (Chaises Bleues de Nice) placed freely along the seafront, available to anyone at no charge. On the landward side, a parade of Belle Époque grand hotels creates the architectural setting for which the promenade is internationally known. The Hôtel Negresco at number 37 — with its pink dome, ornate Belle Époque facade, and private art collection — is the most photographed building on the boulevard. The former Palais de la Méditerranée further west has been restored to its original Art Deco facade. The pebble beaches below the promenade divide between private beach clubs that hire out sun loungers (approximately €18–25 per day) and free public beach sections between them. The dedicated seafront cycle lane runs the full 7 kilometres and connects to the Prom' Party cycle network; bike hire is available at Vélo Bleu stations near the Place Masséna. The eastern section of the promenade transitions into the Quai des États-Unis and leads to the Castle Hill elevator, offering a 90-metre climb to panoramic views over the full arc of the bay. Walking the full 7 kilometres takes approximately 80 to 90 minutes at a leisurely pace; most visitors cover a 2 to 3-kilometre central section around the Negresco and Masséna.
