Saut Morin Waterfall Walk

The Saut Morin Waterfall Walk follows a short forest path from the Roura village area, approximately 50 kilometres south of Cayenne via the D5 road in French Guiana, to a series of cascading waterfalls and natural swimming pools on a tributary of the regional river system. The walk covers approximately three kilometres round trip with around 50 metres of elevation change, typically completed in one and a half to two and a half hours at a relaxed pace. The path begins at the parking area near Roura village and descends through a mix of secondary and primary rainforest to the river, where the Saut Morin cascades create a sequence of natural pools accessible for swimming and wading. The forest alongside the trail is rich in bird species, with the riverbank habitat attracting kingfishers, wading birds, and forest-edge species. The pools at the falls are the primary draw for both local residents and visitors, particularly on weekends when Cayennais families make the day trip from the capital. The trail surface alternates between compacted dirt and rocky sections near the water; water shoes or sandals with grip are useful for accessing the pool edges safely. No formal facilities exist at the falls beyond the parking area at the village — visitors should carry their own food and sufficient water for the outing. The site is reached by car via the D5 south from Cayenne with no regular public transport serving the route. Weekday visits offer a markedly quieter experience than weekends, when the site can become busy with day-trippers. High water levels during the wet season can make pool access unsafe; checking local conditions before visiting in the rainy months is advised.
