Réserve Naturelle du Trésor — La Canopée Trail

The Réserve Naturelle du Trésor is a protected natural area located approximately 50 kilometres south of Cayenne along the D5 road near Roura, in French Guiana, and is one of the most accessible primary rainforest reserves reachable by car from the capital. The reserve's trail network, which includes the La Canopée loop and associated secondary paths, offers between six and ten kilometres of marked walking depending on which combination of trails is selected, with minimal elevation change of zero to 50 metres throughout. The trails pass through exceptional primary Guianan rainforest composed of emergent trees, dense understory growth, and a remarkable diversity of epiphytes, ferns, and flowering plants. The reserve holds significant biodiversity: large populations of poison dart frogs including the strawberry poison frog are present along the forest floor trails, over 400 bird species have been recorded within and around the reserve boundaries, and numerous butterfly species congregate at forest clearings and stream margins. The main Canopée loop is clearly marked and takes two to four hours depending on pace and the number of side paths explored. A canopy observation structure or walkway provides elevated perspectives into the forest strata above ground level, revealing the layered architecture of primary Guianan jungle. Entry to the reserve is managed by the Réserve Naturelle du Trésor conservation association; a small admission fee applies and funds direct conservation and monitoring work. No food service or café operates within the reserve; visitors should bring sufficient food and water for their planned duration. The reserve entrance is reached by driving the D5 south from Cayenne without public transport serving this route. The reserve association manages visitor access and can advise on opening times and current trail conditions.
