The only surviving medieval gate of Gradec, with a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary whose painting survived a 1731 fire.
The Stone Gate was built in the 13th century as one of four gates in the walls of Gradec. In the 1731 fire a wooden painting of the Virgin and Child survived intact, and the gateway became a shrine, the Chapel of the Virgin Mary of the Stone Gate. Locals light candles and leave stone plaques of thanks on the walls. The passage is open to pedestrians at all hours, and the atmosphere is quiet and reverent.
