Huashan North Peak Traditional Ascent (Yuquan Yard Route)

The Yuquan Yard route is the traditional pilgrim path up Mount Hua's North Peak, in Huayin, Shaanxi. The trailhead sits behind Yuquan Temple at the base of the mountain, reached by a short walk or shuttle from the Mount Hua Scenic Area's main gate; entry requires a paid scenic-area ticket, checked at the gate. From there the path climbs roughly 6.5 km one-way and about 1,100 m in elevation to the North Peak at 1,614.9 m, following stone steps cut directly into the granite for much of the route. The surface is almost entirely hewn rock stairway, uneven in places and slick after rain, with little shade for long stretches once above the tree line. Iron chains are bolted to the rock at the steepest sections, including the notorious Thousand-Foot Precipice and Hundred-Foot Crevice, where hikers pull themselves up narrow chiseled footholds with sheer drops to either side. Rest points and small tea stalls appear at intervals such as Wayside Pavilion and the Green Dragon Ridge approach, offering water, instant noodles, and a place to catch breath before the final push. There is no piped water source on the trail itself, so hikers carry what they need or buy bottled water from vendors along the way at a markup. The North Peak itself has a cable car station, a scenic platform, and simple food stalls, making it a natural turn-around point for those not continuing on to the connecting ridge toward Central, East, South, and West Peaks. Most hikers ascend on foot via Yuquan Yard and descend via the North Peak cable car to Huayin, or vice versa, given the toll the stone steps take on the knees. The full ascent typically takes four to six hours depending on fitness and crowd congestion on the chains, which can back up significantly during Chinese national holidays.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Yuquan Yard route suitable for beginners?

It requires reasonable fitness and a tolerance for exposed heights; the chain sections are not technical climbing but do demand steady footing and no fear of drops.

Can hikers skip the walk and take a cable car instead?

Yes, a cable car runs to the North Peak from a separate station, and many visitors combine an on-foot ascent with a cable car descent or vice versa.

Is a permit needed beyond the scenic area ticket?

No separate permit is required; the standard Mount Hua Scenic Area entrance ticket covers access to the Yuquan Yard trailhead and North Peak.
