Huashan East Peak Sunrise Trail

East Peak, also called Facing-Sun Peak, is Mount Hua's traditional sunrise-viewing summit near Huayin, Shaanxi, reached by a roughly 2 km connecting trail from the North Peak cable car station via the ridge junction shared with the Central and South Peak routes. The path is stone stairway cut into the rock, gaining about 350 m to the East Peak summit at 2,096.2 m, with sections of exposed ridge and iron handrail chains where the trail narrows but nothing as severe as the Canglong Ridge crossing to the South Peak. Because the climb is shorter than the other peak routes, it is popular with hikers who overnight partway up the mountain specifically to reach East Peak before dawn. There is a small guesthouse area and rest platform near the summit where hikers gather in the dark waiting for sunrise over the Qinling range and the Wei River valley below; vendors sell hot drinks and rent heavy coats for the cold pre-dawn wait. The summit also has a viewing pavilion and a side path leading to the Chess Pavilion cliff ledge, a popular photo spot overlooking a sheer drop. Shade is minimal throughout, and the surface is bare granite for nearly the entire route, so footing should be checked carefully in low light. Most hikers combine East Peak with the Central Peak and South Peak trails as part of a loop, since the ridge trail connects all three, before descending via the North Peak cable car once the sun has risen and the crowds start moving.
