Foping Nature Reserve Golden Monkey Valley Trail

Foping National Nature Reserve, in Foping County, Hanzhong, Shaanxi, is one of the core protected habitats for the golden snub-nosed monkey and giant panda in the Qinling range, reached by the Xian-Foping bus from Xi'an's Shuisi Bus Station or by private car, with the trail beginning directly at the reserve entrance where a permit-inclusive entrance ticket is required. The Golden Monkey Valley loop connects the entrance area with the Dapingyu panda research base over a gentle 3 km circuit, sitting within the reserve's lower elevations of roughly 1,300 m to 1,600 m, with only modest elevation change throughout. The surface is a mix of maintained dirt path and boardwalk sections through the valley's forest, with substantial tree cover offering shade for nearly the whole route, and the trail follows a stream for part of its length. Sightings of golden snub-nosed monkeys are seasonal and never guaranteed, since the reserve manages habituated troops that move through the valley rather than a captive display, so binoculars are genuinely useful rather than optional. Interpretive signage along the way covers the reserve's conservation work and the species found within it, and the Dapingyu research base has a small visitor area with information on the reserve's panda monitoring program. There is no natural drinking water source directly on the trail, but the entrance area has a visitor center where water and snacks can be purchased before setting out. Given its short length and gentle grade, the loop is manageable for most visitors, including families, though wildlife viewing rewards patience and quiet movement rather than a fast pace.
