Liaoning is a province in northeast China on the Bohai and Yellow Seas, bordering North Korea along the Yalu River. It combines Shenyang's Qing-dynasty imperial heritage, Dalian's beaches and European-style squares, Dandong's view across the border, and a long Great Wall coastline at Hushan and Xingcheng. Liaoning is also the heartland of Dongbei cuisine: dumplings, barbecue, stews, and fresh Yellow Sea seafood.
Liaoning covers about 148,000 km² of plains, low mountains, and 2,000 km of coastline, and is home to roughly 42 million people. Shenyang, the provincial capital and largest city (about 9.07 million people against Dalian's 7.45 million in the 2020 census), holds the Shenyang Imperial Palace (Mukden Palace) and the Qing imperial tombs at Fuling and Zhaoling, all UNESCO World Heritage sites. Dalian, the largest port city, is known for seaside promenades, Xinghai Square, Tiger Beach, Golden Pebble Beach, and its Russian and Japanese colonial architecture. In the east, Dandong looks across the Yalu River to North Korea, with the Broken Bridge and the Hushan section of the Great Wall. To the west, Xingcheng and Jinzhou offer a quieter Bohai coast, and Benxi has a huge karst cave reached by boat. Winters are long and freezing; summers are warm and pleasant on the coast. Regional high-speed trains link the main cities quickly, and Dongbei food is generous and inexpensive.

The historic flagship of Shenyang's best-known dumpling house, founded in 1829, on the Zhongjie pedestrian street. Its signature is fried-then-simmered dumplings with pork, seafood or vegetable fillings, plus cold dishes and Manchu-style snacks.

Liaoning is one of China's best-connected provinces. The Beijing-Shenyang, Shenyang-Dalian and Harbin-Dalian high-speed lines make rail the fastest and cheapest way between the main cities: Shenyang to Dalian takes roughly 2.5-3 hours, Shenyang to Dandong about 2 hours and Shenyang to Beijing about 4 hours. Shenyang and Dalian have modern metros, buses and DiDi, and Dalian adds heritage trams and coastal ferries to Shandong. Foreign visitors should carry a passport at all times, install Alipay or WeChat Pay, and use the 12306 or Trip.com apps to book trains.

Late May-June and September to mid-October are the best times, with mild weather, clear skies and fewer crowds than July-August or National Day week.
Sea swimming is practical only in July-early September; Benxi Guanmenshan foliage peaks in the middle of October; Dalian sea fog is common from May to July.
