Yangtze Riverside at Yanziji

The Yangtze Riverside at Yanziji is the most dramatic waterfront in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, located in Qixia District about 15 km northeast of the city centre. It is a river bank rather than a sea beach, so visitors find rock, stone embankment and a waterfront walking path instead of sand. The Yangtze here is wide, fast and brown-tinged with silt, and swimming is unsafe and not permitted for casual visitors, so the experience is one of walking and viewing. The scenic area is named for Swallow Rock (Yanziji), a cliff that juts into the river; a cliff-top viewpoint gives wide views over the water and passing cargo ships. The exposed position means breezes off the river can be strong, and the space is open rather than a sheltered cove. The mood is calm and scenic, popular with local families, photographers and walkers, and it is generally less crowded than the central lake parks, though weekends and holidays draw more visitors. Amenities are modest: toilets and small snack kiosks are available, and there are no sun loungers or lifeguards, so visitors should bring water and sun protection. Access is simple: Metro Line 4 stops at Yanziji Station, and from there it is a short walk or a five-minute taxi ride to the scenic area. Parking is possible but the metro is easier. April-June and September-October offer the most pleasant weather and clearer views, while summer can be hot and humid and winter winds off the river can feel cold. Sunrise and late afternoon light are best for photography. The stretch combines well with other Yangtze waterfront stops such as Jiangxinzhou or the Yangtze River Bridge Park, and it is a reasonable choice for visitors who want a big-river setting and space to walk while staying within the Nanjing city area.
