Qinhuai River, Confucius Temple

The Qinhuai River at the Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao) scenic area is the historic waterfront of old Nanjing, in Qinhuai District, Jiangsu province. It is not a sand or pebble beach: the riverbank is a stone-paved walkway lined with tea houses, snack stalls, lanterned facades and traditional-style buildings, and the water is a slow, murky urban canal that is unsuitable for swimming. The draw is atmosphere rather than bathing. In the evening the river is lit by lanterns, and night boat cruises run along the water at roughly ¥80-100 per person, passing bridges and reconstructed old-style houses. The stretch is short and sheltered, with no surf or wind exposure, and it is busy and lively rather than quiet, popular with domestic tour groups, families and couples, especially after dark and on weekends and holidays. Amenities are plentiful: the riverfront walkway has tea houses and snack stalls, restaurants are steps away, and toilets are available in the scenic area. There are no sun loungers or lifeguards. The Confucius Temple and Zhanyuan Garden are nearby and can be combined with the river walk. Access is easy since the area is in the old city centre, south of Xinjiekou: Metro Line 3 to Fuzimiao Station, then about five minutes on foot to the riverfront. Traffic around the temple is heavy, so the metro is preferable to driving or taxis at peak times. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable evenings for cruises, while summer nights are warm and crowded and winter can be cold and damp. The area is open year-round and works well as an evening outing after daytime sightseeing elsewhere in Nanjing. Visitors wanting a real waterside setting with open views and space should look at the Yangtze banks at Yanziji or Jiangxinzhou instead, as the Qinhuai is best as a cultural, food and night-scene stop.
