Mochou Lake Park

Mochou Lake Park is a classical Chinese garden lake in Qinhuai District, Nanjing, Jiangsu, about 4 km west of Xinjiekou. It is not a sea beach: the shoreline is made of stone embankments, willow-lined paths, pavilions and small bridges rather than sand or pebbles, and the freshwater lake is calm, shallow-looking and not managed for swimming. The park suits visitors who want a waterside stroll in a traditional setting, and it is known in local tradition through the legend of Mochou, a girl of the Southern dynasties era associated with the lake. Small boats can be hired on the water, and rose and lotus gardens flower in season, making spring and early summer especially photogenic. The lake is modest in size and sheltered from wind, so there is no surf and little exposure; the mood is quiet, romantic and family-friendly, drawing couples, older residents, and school and tour groups. Amenities include toilets, a ticket gate and shaded pavilions, but there are no sun loungers or lifeguards because bathing is not offered. Park admission is around ¥20, and this should be confirmed at the gate as prices can change. Access is straightforward: Metro Line 2 stops at Yunjinlu Station, from which the park is a short walk, and a taxi from Xinjiekou takes about 10 minutes. Parking is limited nearby, so public transport or a taxi is the better choice. The best months are April-May and September-October, when temperatures are mild and gardens are in flower; summer afternoons are hot and humid, and winter can be grey and cold. The park pairs well with a visit to nearby Nanjing city sights, and visitors wanting a proper riverside or open-water setting should look to the Yangtze banks at Yanziji or Jiangxinzhou instead. Mochou Lake works best as an easy half-day stop within the city rather than as a swimming destination.
