Wudang Mountains Nanyan Cliffside Path

An easier cliffside walk connecting Nanyan Palace's carved stone dragon head to panoramic views over the Wudang range.

The Nanyan Cliffside Path is a short, paved circuit around Nanyan Palace in the Wudang Mountains Scenic Area, Shiyan, Hubei Province, reached by the free scenic-area shuttle bus that stops directly at Nanyan. The 3km loop follows a stone walkway bolted along a limestone cliff face at around 1,300m elevation, with a gentle, largely level grade and metal railings along the exposed drop side for its entire length. Hikers pass the Nanyan Palace temple complex, itself carved into a cliff recess, before reaching the famous Dragon Head Rock, a stone dragon carved to jut out over a sheer drop, once used by pilgrims to place incense at its mouth (now fenced off for safety). The path continues along the cliff to a series of viewing platforms looking out over the forested valleys and distant peaks of the wider Wudang range. Surface is stone paving throughout, dry and stable in normal weather, though it can become slippery in rain or light snow. Shade is intermittent, provided by the cliff overhang in sections and open sky elsewhere. There are no water sources along the path itself, but small stalls near the Nanyan Palace entrance sell drinks and snacks, and public toilets are available at the palace complex. Because the loop is short and returns to its starting point, there is no meaningful turn-around decision; most visitors complete the full circuit in under two hours, often combining it with a visit to the Golden Peak Trail via the connecting shuttle.
