Shennongding Summit Trail

The Shennongding Summit Trail climbs to Shennongding (3,105m), the highest point in central China, within the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province. Access is via the Shennongjia scenic area's internal shuttle bus, which runs from Muyu Town to a parking area near the trailhead; the shuttle and entrance ticket must be purchased at the scenic area gate, and private cars are not permitted on the final approach road. From the parking area, a raised wooden boardwalk covers most of the roughly 2.5km one-way route, protecting the fragile subalpine meadow and dwarf bamboo groundcover from erosion. The elevation gain from the trailhead itself is modest, since the shuttle already climbs to around 2,900m, but the thin air at this altitude makes even gentle sections feel strenuous, and unacclimatized visitors commonly report breathlessness or mild headache. The boardwalk is fully exposed to wind and weather with no tree cover once above the treeline, and temperatures can drop sharply even in summer. Along the way, hikers pass viewing platforms overlooking the Dagu and Xiaogu peaks and, on clear mornings, a sea of clouds settling in the valleys below. The summit itself is marked by a stone marker and small weather station. There are no water sources or shelters along the boardwalk; the nearest facilities, including toilets and a warming room, are at the parking area. The trail can close without notice when snow, ice, or lightning risk make the exposed boardwalk unsafe.
