Dajiuhu Wetland Trail

The Dajiuhu Wetland Trail loops through Dajiuhu National Wetland Park, a high plateau basin at roughly 1,700m within the Shennongjia Forestry District, Hubei Province, about a two-hour drive from Muyu Town by private car or arranged transport. The 6km loop is essentially flat, following gravel paths and raised boardwalk sections around the shallow lakes and marshland that give the 'Nine Lakes' (Dajiuhu) its name. The route passes open grassland grazed by local livestock, patches of reed marsh, and seasonal wildflower meadows that peak in early summer, with interpretive signs identifying common bird species along the way. Because the basin sits in a natural drainage bowl, the ground can be waterlogged after rain even where boardwalks are not present, so waterproof footwear is worth carrying regardless of forecast. There is minimal shade around the open wetland, though a few tree-lined stretches near the settlement at the park's edge offer relief from the sun. Water is visible throughout in the lakes and channels but is not treated for drinking; bottled water should be brought from Muyu Town, as options within the park are limited to a handful of small guesthouses and shops in the Dajiuhu village. There are no formal rest shelters along the loop itself beyond these village amenities, which sit roughly at the trail's start and end point, making them a natural stop for hikers wanting to split the walk into shorter segments.
