Shaolin Temple sits on the western slope of Mount Songshan near Dengfeng, about 80 km (50 miles) southwest of central Zhengzhou in Henan province. The birthplace of Shaolin kung fu and of Chan (Zen) Buddhism in China, it is the most visited day-trip destination from the provincial capital. The journey takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way. Frequent coaches run from Zhengzhou to Dengfeng from about 06:30 for around ¥25-40, followed by a 20-30 minute taxi or DiDi ride to the scenic area for about ¥25-40. A DiDi from Zhengzhou straight to the temple costs about ¥150-250 and saves an hour of transfers. Entry to the temple area is about ¥80, though visitors should check the current price.

An early start shapes the day. Arriving by about 09:00 lets visitors walk the temple before tour groups peak. The core complex includes the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, and the Thousand Buddha Hall, whose floor is pitted by centuries of martial-arts footwork. Just outside the walls, the Pagoda Forest holds more than 200 brick and stone memorial stupas for Shaolin abbots and monks, and is reached on a short, gently sloping walk. Scheduled kung fu demonstrations by resident monks and students run several times a day and are usually included in the ticket; the schedule is posted at the entrance.

After lunch, the afternoon can go to the Songshan mountain trails. The Sanhuangzhai and Songyang trails are options, and cable cars reduce the climb. Visitors wanting a lighter afternoon can add the Bodhidharma cave path or simply linger in the pagoda area. Simple noodle and vegetarian dishes are sold in restaurants along Shaolin Avenue and near the entrance, while Dengfeng town has a wider range of Henan noodle shops for a meal before the return coach. The best season is April-May and September-November, when temperatures are mild and the hills are green or golden. Summer is hot and crowded, and winter mornings can be cold with fewer visitors. Last coaches back to Zhengzhou leave Dengfeng in the early evening, so visitors should plan to leave the temple by about 16:00 to be safe, or arrange a return DiDi in advance.
