The Longmen Grottoes are a UNESCO World Heritage cave-temple complex on the banks of the Yi River in Longmen Town, south of Luoyang in Henan province, about 150 km west of Zhengzhou. Carving began in the late 5th century under the Northern Wei dynasty and continued for around 400 years through the Tang dynasty, leaving more than 2,000 caves and niches, thousands of Buddha images and tens of thousands of statues along a limestone cliff face roughly a kilometre long.

UNESCO-listed Buddhist cave temples carved from the 5th to 8th centuries, home of the 17 m Vairocana Buddha.

The centrepiece is the Fengxian Temple cave on the west bank, where the seated Vairocana Buddha, about 17 m tall, presides over a group of disciples, bodhisattvas and guardian figures; the serene face is traditionally associated with the Tang empress Wu Zetian. Other highlights include the Guyang Cave and the Binyang Caves, with early Northern Wei carving and inscriptions, and the Lotus Cave with its carved ceiling. Visitors walk along the cliff paths, climbing steps to reach the caves, then cross a bridge to the quieter east bank for views back across the river to the great Buddha. Admission is about CNY 90, with reduced fares for children, and the site opens daily from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, or to 5:00 PM in winter, with last entry about 30 minutes before closing. A half day is the standard visit, and photographers may take longer. Early morning is the best time to see the Vairocana Buddha in gentle light and with fewer visitors; midday brings large groups, and national holidays are very crowded. The east bank is quieter and the view from there is good in the evening as lights come on. A high-speed train from Zhengzhou East to Luoyang Longmen Station takes about 30-50 minutes for CNY 70-100, followed by a short taxi or bus. An audio guide or a local guide adds a lot, since many niches are small and unlabelled in English. Photography is allowed in the open cliff areas, though restrictions may apply in some caves.
