Fengjie Barbecue (Linsheng Street)

Fengjie Barbecue occupies Linsheng Street, a side lane off Zhongshan Road in central Nanning, and is a long-running charcoal grill operation that forms part of the late-night barbecue culture keeping this district trading into the early hours. The grill turns out charcoal-grilled oysters with garlic, grilled chives and aubergine, beef and lamb skewers, and whole grilled fish, all cooked to order over open charcoal rather than pre-grilled and reheated. Seating is outdoor, on plastic tables and stools set up on the street each evening and allocated on arrival, with no reservations and no fixed dress code; the atmosphere is loud, smoky and social, built around beer and skewers rather than a formal meal. There is no beverage list beyond beer and soft drinks, which are central to the barbecue-street drinking culture. The kitchen opens only in the evening, from around 6PM, and runs until roughly 2AM, in step with the rest of the night market district.
