Nanning is the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China, a subtropical river city nicknamed the "Green City" (绿城) for the banyan-shaded avenues, flowering trees, and park systems that cover much of its urban area. The city sits on the Yong River (邕江), the chief southern tributary of the Xi River system, roughly 160 km from the Vietnamese border, which has made it China's principal gateway to Southeast Asia and the permanent host of the annual China-ASEAN Expo. Nanning is also the cultural center of the Zhuang, China's largest ethnic minority, and visitors come for the Guangxi Museum of Nationalities, the terraced gardens of Qingxiu Mountain, and a rice-noodle food culture built around laoyou fen, the city's sour-spicy "old friend" noodles.

Day trip tips
Make the most of your excursions.
Detian Waterfall and Huashan rock art are both 3-4 hour journeys each way, so they work as single-destination days with an early start rather than as half-day add-ons.
Book high-speed rail tickets to Beihai and Guilin on 12306 or Trip.com as soon as they go on sale, roughly 15 days ahead, and far earlier around national holidays.
Detian sits directly on the China-Vietnam border, so a passport should be carried and border signage respected; the falls are shared with the Ban Gioc side in Vietnam.
Guilin is a genuine same-day return at 2.5-3 hours each way, but adding Yangshuo pushes the journey past what a single day can absorb.
Rural bus services to Wuming, Long'an and Daxin thin out in the late afternoon, so the last departure time is worth confirming before setting off.
Save each destination in Amap or Baidu Maps in Chinese before leaving Nanning, since signage outside the city is mostly Chinese-only.
