Wulong Karst National Geopark & Furong Cave

Wulong Karst National Geopark lies about 150 km southeast of downtown Chongqing in Wulong District, reached in 40 minutes to 2 hours by high-speed train from Chongqing North, East, or West stations to Wulong South, then a further 40-45 minutes by taxi to Furong Cave or the Xiannvshan plateau. Part of the UNESCO-listed South China Karst, the geopark's main draws are Furong Cave, a vast limestone cavern with illuminated stalactite chambers and underground rivers, and the Three Natural Bridges (Tianlongqiao), a trio of giant karst bridges that have appeared in Chinese films, alongside the cooler Xiannvshan alpine meadow further afield. A one-day itinerary typically starts with an early train to Wulong South, followed by a morning at Furong Cave, where a guided walkway loop through the cavern takes 60-90 minutes. Lunch is usually taken at one of the small restaurants near the cave entrance or at Wulong town, serving Chongqing-style spicy fish and local mountain vegetables, before an afternoon spent at the Three Natural Bridges or, for travelers prioritizing scenery over caves, a swap to Xiannvshan's grassland and canyon boardwalks. Because Furong Cave and the natural bridges sit in different parts of the geopark, visitors usually pick one or two sites rather than attempting all three in a single day, coordinating taxis between stops. April-June and September-October bring the most comfortable temperatures on the karst plateau, avoiding summer humidity in the gorges and winter cold at higher elevations; arriving on the first available morning train leaves the most daylight for the return taxi and train connections back to Chongqing before evening.
