Fengdu Ghost City

Fengdu Ghost City lies about 160 km east of downtown Chongqing along the Yangtze River, reachable in about an hour by high-speed train from Chongqing North to Fengdu Dingzhuang, followed by a short local bus or taxi to the Mingshan scenic area; a Yangtze River cruise shore excursion is another common way to reach it, taking roughly six hours of transit from Chongqing. Mingshan hill is covered in temples and shrines built over more than 1,800 years around the folk mythology of the underworld, featuring statues and pavilions such as the Nothing-to-Be-Done Bridge, the Ghost Torturing Pass, and the Tianzi Palace at the summit, all illustrating Taoist and Buddhist ideas about judgment after death. A one-day visit typically begins with the morning train to Fengdu Dingzhuang, arriving at Mingshan by late morning; a cable car or the original stone stairway carries visitors up the hill, and the full temple circuit takes roughly two to three hours on foot. Lunch is best taken in Fengdu town near the ferry pier, where riverside restaurants serve Yangtze river fish and Chongqing hotpot-style dishes, before an afternoon return train or, for cruise passengers, rejoining the ship. The site is visited year-round as a fixed Yangtze cruise stop, but for independent day-trippers, spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) bring the most comfortable temperatures for the hillside walk. Arriving in the morning also avoids the midday heat on the exposed upper terraces and lets visitors catch the return train before evening.
