Cherni Vrah is the highest summit of Vitosha mountain at 2,290 metres, in Vitosha Nature Park just south of Sofia, Bulgaria. The summit is a broad, treeless ridge with a weather station and antennas, and it offers one of the widest views in the region. At sunrise the sun rises over the plains to the east, lighting the long ridgeline of Vitosha, the domes of the surrounding valleys and, on clear mornings, the Sofia basin and distant ranges such as the Rila and Balkan mountains. The frame is a layered mountain landscape, with low mist in the valleys, warm sunlight on the grassy slopes and the dark mass of the ridge. Summer sunrises are easiest to reach and often give clean skies, while winter brings snow, rime ice and dramatic cold light, though conditions can be severe with strong winds and low temperatures. Autumn inversions, with clouds filling the lowlands, are rewarding when they occur. Access is by walking from the Aleko area, where the gondola and chairlifts end, and photographers usually start about 1.5 hours before dawn with a headlamp, since lifts do not normally run that early. The route is marked but exposed, so a warm layer, windproof jacket and a charged phone are essential. Crowds are small before dawn, mostly hikers and a few photographers, and there is plenty of room for a tripod on the open ridge, though wind can shake it, so a sturdy tripod is needed. Entry to the nature park may involve rules posted by the park authority, and drones are restricted within the protected area. A 16-35mm lens covers the wide landscape, and a 70-200mm pulls out distant ridges and layers of mist. There are no toilets on the summit, and the nearest facilities and water are at the Aleko huts and restaurants.
