Aleko is a mountain resort area on Vitosha, within Vitosha Nature Park above Sofia, Bulgaria, at roughly 1,800 metres, and it is reached by a gondola and chairlifts or by road. From the open slopes near the ski area the ground falls away to the north, and on clear days the whole Sofia basin lies below, with the city, its suburbs and the plain stretching toward the Balkan Mountains in the distance. The frame is a wide cityscape and mountain view, with the sun setting over the western horizon and sending warm light across the valley while the city begins to glow. A telephoto lens compresses the layers of ridges, and the city lights appear as the sky darkens, giving a good blue-hour finish. Clear autumn days offer the best visibility, with cooler air and less haze; winter adds snow in the foreground and crisp, long-range views, though temperatures can be very low and access conditions need checking. Summer is also possible but haze often reduces contrast. Aleko is popular with skiers, hikers and families, so the main viewpoints around the huts and lift stations can be crowded at weekends, though a short walk along the slope gives more space for a tripod. Tripods are allowed in the nature park, provided they do not obstruct paths or ski runs. Drones are restricted in the protected area. A 70-200mm lens and a sturdy tripod are the most useful equipment, as wind can be strong. Lift operation times should be checked before relying on them for a return after sunset, and a headlamp is useful for the walk back. Restaurants and huts at Aleko provide toilets, water and warm food.
